Petersburg’s August 2018 Friday for the Arts! brings us music, art, fun activities, food, new beers, and spirits. There will be music in at least fourteen performing arts venues, the Tri-Cities Soul Dancers in the Art Park, and great exhibits at the Petersburg Public Library, Walton Gallery, The Ward Center for Contemporary Art, the Morena Bohemia Art Gallery, and the Petersburg Area Art League.
The Library is has an exhibit of the work of Lydia Gray and Lindiwe Njoki Kubweza. Walton Gallery is displaying the work of five nationally-known artists: Najee Dorsey, Lamerol Gatewood, Carl McIntosh, Ron Walton, and Dennis Winston. The Ward is opening a major new and expanded exhibit of recent work in eggshell and paint by Sheila Maitland Holland, entitled Textural Inclusion, as well as new work by Christopher C. Alexander. In addition, The Ward is featuring expanded exhibits by James Timberlake and Eugene Vango, and continues an exhibit by Freedom Wilson, entitled Just Enough Grace for You. Other continuing exhibits at The Ward include work by Carol Anna Meese, entitled Brand New Day, by Bonnie Koenig, by Risegun Olomidun, and no fewer than ten other gallery exhibits, including work by Rosamond Casey, Bobby English, Jr., Mary Montague Sikes, Clifton Dickens, Dolly Holmes, Mark Pehanich, Aimee Joyaux, Omni Waters, and Terry Ammons, as well as at least twenty resident studio artists. The Art League will open a new exhibit of recent work by Henry Kidd, and A Day of Terror: The Roof Just Went Away, a special exhibit about the Great Twister of 1993, curated by Michael Edwards. Morena Bohemia Art Gallery will feature an exhibit of illustrative work by London-based artist Elena Guzinska and new artwork by Linda Walker Clark. A retrospective exhibit of work by Ken Graves and Joe Miller , as well as books by Dr. John Lynn and Stella McCormack, will be shown at Abigails. An exhibit of Lisa Mistry’s Birds will be shown at Petersburg Provisions.
The Tri-Cities Soul Dancers will be performing in the Art Park at the Art League at 7:00 pm.
The Petersburg Public Library will present the fifth of a monthly series, Jazz in the Stacks, featuring this month members of The Legends Band. The Ward will present the superlative harpist Mary Jane D’Arville. Mat Via & The Dirty Runaways will be at Old Towne’s Alibi, Way Down South Acoustic at Longstreet’s, Bobby Horne at Abigails, Rudy Faulkner & Friends at Croaker’s Spot, the Sinatra-style crooner Joe LaLuna at Maria’s, saxophonist Rick Elliott in the Martini Lounge at Wabi Sabi, and Friend Zone in the Music Room at Wabi. Iris Schwartz will be playing the flute at the Art League. Ryssa Lee Busching (acoustic) will perform at Local Vibe Café. Scott Billings, Jimmy Tynes and the Triple B Blues Band will perform on the patio at Andrade’s, and the California Band Fish Out of Water on the patio at DJ’s Rajun Cajun. And the Scottish singers of Clan Haggis will be performing in at Tramonto Ristorante. Music this month from six to one!
